Think candies, and you’ll think of childhood memories, all sorts of colors, and the incomparable feeling of a sugary candy melting in your mouth.
We all have sweet (both literally and figuratively) memories associated with the wonder called candies.
While recently watching an episode of Unwrapped, I was delighted to know that I had stumbled upon an episode that unwrapped the history of candies and the secrets that go into their making.
The victim of a sweet tooth that I am, I couldn’t stop myself from drooling over all the tempting candies that filled the screen. In fact, I ended up getting a download of that episode and adding it to my collection of my favorites from Unwrapped.
But well, that’s a different story.
What I am here to share with you guys, are some of the most amazing facts that I learnt about candies, on the episode.
To start with, as always, it was interesting to know where this delicacy gets its name from. It turned out that the word ‘Candy’ is derived from the Persian word ‘Qandi’, which stands for cane sugar.
I must say, that one of the things I love best about candies is their name. It so suits the treat that they offer the taste buds!
Watching the colorful images of everything, right from gum drops and tart candies to hard candies and taffies, unfolding on the screen, can be difficult to watch for ones, who loves these sweet treats.
But then, once you get through it successfully, you’re sure to enjoy your next candy binge more than ever, knowing the story behind each one of them.
For instance, did you know that the basic mechanism behind preparing all types of candies is the same?
It involves heating a mixture of sugar and water or milk, till it crystallizes?
Sounds simple?
Well, you’ll know better when you watch the candies actually being made, and then realize the intricacies of temperature, time and technique that go into the making of each type of candy.
Tune in to the candy-special on Unwrapped. I promise you won’t regret it!

Wondering why? Continue to read the strings of words further!
The Unwrapped star, who has been charming us for longer than we can remember, has gone on to become one of the most renowned men in the entertainment industry. He has always been portrayed as a fearless and fun-loving man, who doesn’t take himself too seriously.
No offence to the show’s charming host, Marc Sommers, but it’s kind of hard to focus on what he’s saying when on the table lies a smoked tenderloin with the horseradish sauce. Yeah, it’s not easy being a food writer, I can tell you that!
